Zeta Lambda Chapter has a long history of awarding scholarships to meet the needs of our college bound young men and women on the Peninsula.  Under the direction and guidance of Bro. Shade J. Palmer, our Educational Committee Chairman, Zeta Lambda re-established its scholarship program in 1995.  All Newport News (Virginia) High School rising seniors in the top 25% of their class and who had a minimum GPA of 3.00 were eligible to apply for this scholarship valued at $2,500 over a four year period.  The award recipient would receive $1,000 ($500 per semester) during their freshman year, renewable at $500 through each of their sophomore through senior years, if they maintained a cumulative "B" average.  In 1996, eligibility was extended to the adjacent municipalities of Williamsburg-James City County and York County, Virginia.

In 2008, Zeta Lambda’s scholarship program was restructured under the leadership of Bro. Pascal P. Barreau, our Director of Education, to provide three one-time $1,000 scholarships to selected students entering their freshman year of college using the same criteria.  In May 2008, the Chapter awarded its first three $1,000 scholarships under the revised scholarship program.

From 1995-2012, Zeta Lambda has awarded $46,500 in scholarships--Williamsburg-James City County ($7,000), York County ($13,000), & Newport News ($26,500).  The Chapter stresses that we were seeking those candidates who best exemplify the goals of Alpha Phi Alpha--scholarship, positive deeds, and caring for their fellow beings.

Dr. Pascal P. Barreau says it is receiving comments like “…I just wanted to email you to let you know that I am still at North Carolina A&T SU.  I am so excited to get the Fall semester started… I want to thank you and the other men for selecting me to receive the scholarship.  It helped me out so much and I am very appreciative…” from Chantel Smith – North Carolina A&T Student and 2007 scholarship recipient that makes it all worthwhile.
